During this year’s powwow, I volunteered at the t-shirt table. This gave me the opportunity to sit back and observe as opposed to interacting as much as I usually do. It was apparent that the main purpose of a powwow is to serve as a social event. There were pretty much the same people in attendance from the same areas that we have every year. Of course there is dancing, food, and jewelry, but everyone’s favorite part is getting to catch up with all the people from that they haven’t seen since the last powwow. One thing that I appreciate about our powwow is that non-Indian students from the campus come to support as well. I really enjoy inviting my friends and seeing them take an active interest in Native culture.
